In the Name of Love

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and I'd like to pay tribute to him. He worked for so much positive change and gave one of the most famous speeches in history, his "I have a dream" speech. I'd like to include a few memorable lines from this speech.

"I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today."

I believe that Dr. King's dream has become a reality for many, and that today's children do not have the same worries as those forty years ago. However Dr. King was not one for complacency and issued us this challenge:

"If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

U2 wrote a song called, "Pride (In the Name of Love)" which pays tribute to Dr. King and contains the line, "In the name of love, one more in the name of love."

Given recent events, I can't help but think of those who recently lost their lives in Tuscon, Arizona. The young girl who was killed, Christina Taylor Green, weighs heavily on my mind. She was robbed of the opportunity to make a difference, and that makes me both sad and angry.

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient; bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to one hope when you were called - one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." Ephesians 4:2-6

"A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35
